2025 Artist: Luis Sotero
As Arts Marathon artists we will send a different example of our creative process and work to everyone who sponsors us, five days per week during April. We invite our friends, family, colleagues and anyone else who cares about art and wants to support Bridge to Rutland’s important work to sponsor us. Together we will help welcome new Americans who, in turn, will add immeasurably to our communities.
Luis‘s Arts Marathon Goal
Luis will be showing paintings and murals that depict scenes he has seen and experienced along with other migrants' stories.Luis‘s Background
Luis is a self-taught artist who lives in Nogales, Mexico. In 2015 he attempted to cross the U.S./Mexico border, was captured by Border Patrol, kept in a detention center for one year and then deported to Mexico. It was at that point that he started teaching himself to paint. Luis's art is a documentation of what is currently happening in the desert between Arizona and Mexico and a self-reflection of the trauma and suffering he has experienced. He volunteers his time every week at the KINO Border Initiative in Nogales (Mexico), helping migrants to learn how to paint and start processing their trauma.
